Tips from Homeowners: How to Hire a Contractor for Remodeling
Whether you love your home the way it is and just need a little space, or you’re trying to build the dream home you’ve always wanted from an existing house, you know that hiring a good remodeling contractor is important. However, if you’re like a lot of people, you’re not quite sure how to go about doing that.
These tips can help you find the right contractor for your job, no matter what you want to do. Make sure you use them all to get the right person on the job.
1. Get referrals from people you know who have actually worked with the contractor. Just because a friend knows a contractor doesn’t mean they are good. You need referrals from people with first-hand experience.
2. Interview contractors over the phone or in person. You need to make sure you have a good working rapport with them and can communicate clearly. Otherwise your remodeling project may not go as smoothly as it could with somebody you can talk to efficiently.
3. Ask to see credentials. There’s nothing wrong with making sure any contractor you hire really is licensed, bonded and a true professional.
4. Seek out work that they have already done. Most contractors can point you to homes or buildings they have worked on in the past. They’ll probably be able to give you references from satisfied customers as well. Don’t be afraid to actually use these references, either.
